Does ChatGPT have artifacts? The short answer
- Pages in Space are editable documents you and ChatGPT work on together, with charts, trackers and interactive tools. Create and edit on Pro, Business and Enterprise, on web or desktop. Space replaces Library.
- ChatGPT Sites makes hosted websites and web apps. A public Site opens without ChatGPT workspace access. In beta on paid plans.
- Writing blocks and code blocks took over canvas's job in chat. Canvas isn't available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking.
- File previews in the desktop app show generated documents, presentations, spreadsheets and PDFs beside the chat. OpenAI's page is titled "Work with files".
Sites publishes a website, and a Space page can be shared with named people as View, Comment or Edit. OpenAI's pages don't say whether a reader of a Space page needs a ChatGPT account, or whether there is an "anyone with the link" option.
What happened to ChatGPT canvas
- 6 February 2025: canvas can be shared with another user, like a conversation.
- 28 May 2026: canvas is removed from GPT-5.5 Instant and Thinking. Writing and coding move into chat as writing blocks and code blocks. Paid users can keep canvas for a limited time on legacy models until those are sunset.
- 8 June 2026: writing blocks get a full-screen editor for long writing, with a table of contents, downloads and saving to the Library.
- 9 July 2026: ChatGPT Sites enters public beta.
- 29 September 2026: Space and Pages arrive. Space replaces Library; Projects stay separate.
- 16 October 2026: Slides arrive in Space.
OpenAI's pages say canvas gave way to writing blocks and code blocks, and that Space replaces Library. They don't say that Space or Sites replace canvas, although Pages do a similar job.
ChatGPT canvas missing or not working? What OpenAI says
- On GPT-5.5 Instant or Thinking? Canvas isn't available in either since 28 May 2026. It was removed, not broken.
- On a paid plan? Paid users can keep canvas for a limited time on legacy models until those are sunset. OpenAI doesn't name them or give an end date.
- Want to write or code in chat? Use writing blocks and code blocks. Long writing opens in a full-screen editor.
- Want a shareable document? That is a Page in Space, on Pro, Business or Enterprise.
- Made canvases before? OpenAI's release notes don't say what happens to them, so copy out anything you need.
Looking for the Library? For accounts with access to Space, Space replaces Library, and Projects stay separate.

Artifacts in Codex: previews, not published pages
OpenAI's page on working with files covers previewing, not publishing:
- ChatGPT desktop app: previews generated files beside the chat, and lets you select part of a preview to ask for a focused revision.
- Codex CLI: creates and edits files, with no visual preview or annotation interface.
- IDE extension: edits files in your workspace and opens documents, presentations, spreadsheets and PDFs in a compatible viewer.
- ChatGPT Sites: ChatGPT and Codex can change a Site, per OpenAI's Sites docs.
None of this gives a Codex result a link you can share, apart from a Site.
Publish anything ChatGPT or Codex makes as a space with its own link
- Connect your AI to spacesheep, once. The card above has the button and the one prompt to paste.
- Ask ChatGPT or Codex to publish what it made with spacesheep. It gives you a link.
- Pick who opens it: named people, your team, or anyone. Readers don't need a ChatGPT account.
- Keep editing from any AI. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI can change the same space, and every version is kept.
What none of the built-in tools move
The pages, Sites and artifacts your AI made live inside the app that made them, and no documented import moves them across. If you are switching between ChatGPT and Claude, here is what moves and what doesn't.
Asked often
Does ChatGPT have artifacts?
Not under that name in OpenAI's pages. Its closest features are Pages in Space (Pro, Business and Enterprise), ChatGPT Sites for hosted websites, and file previews in the desktop app, which OpenAI's page calls Work with files. Canvas has left its current default models.
Is ChatGPT canvas still available?
Not in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking: OpenAI's release notes say canvas stopped being available there with the 28 May 2026 update. Paid users can keep using it for a limited time through legacy models until those are sunset.
Why is ChatGPT canvas missing or not working?
Canvas isn't available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking: OpenAI removed it with the 28 May 2026 update. Paid users can use it for a limited time through legacy models until those are sunset, and OpenAI's note doesn't name them or give an end date. Writing and coding now happen in the chat, through writing blocks and code blocks.
Where did ChatGPT Library go?
For accounts with access to Space, Space replaces Library. Projects stay separate and keep your project chats, files and instructions.
What replaced ChatGPT canvas?
OpenAI says writing and coding are now supported directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks, and from 8 June 2026 longer writing opens in a full-screen editor. OpenAI doesn't say Space or Sites replace canvas; its pages say Space replaces Library.
What is ChatGPT Space?
Space is where ChatGPT keeps your pages, files and slides, announced on 29 September 2026. It replaces Library, and Projects stay separate. You can create and edit on Pro, Business and Enterprise, on the web or in the desktop app; mobile can read and share pages but not edit them.
Can I share a ChatGPT Space page with someone outside ChatGPT?
OpenAI's pages say you can share a page with View, Comment or Edit access, and that the options available depend on your account and workspace. They don't say whether a reader needs a ChatGPT account, or whether there is an anyone-with-the-link option. On spacesheep, an open space needs no account at all.
Does Codex have artifacts?
OpenAI documents previews, not artifacts. The ChatGPT desktop app previews generated files beside the chat, the IDE extension opens them in a compatible viewer, and the Codex CLI has no visual preview. Anything Codex makes can get a shareable link by publishing it with spacesheep.
Can I share a file ChatGPT or Codex made with a link?
OpenAI's page on working with files covers opening, downloading and reviewing, not sharing. ChatGPT Sites publishes websites, and a public Site opens without ChatGPT workspace access. Space shares pages with named people. For anything else, publish it with spacesheep and pick who opens it.
Can Claude and ChatGPT edit the same document?
Not inside either app. Published with spacesheep, the same space can be changed by Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, Cursor or Codex at the same link, with every version kept.
