Neither app documents reading the other's data export, so treat yours as an archive.
ChatGPT to Claude, step by step
- Export your ChatGPT data as an archive: Settings, Data controls, Export. The link arrives by email, can take up to 7 days, and expires 24 hours after it arrives. Business and Enterprise members can't export it themselves.
- Move your memory: in Claude, open Settings, Memory, and choose Start import. Paste Anthropic's prompt into ChatGPT, copy what ChatGPT answers, paste it back into Claude and choose Add to memory. Claude splits it into entries you can review.
- Leave the chats in the archive. Claude's help page says conversation history from another provider can't be imported.
- Save what ChatGPT made for you. Project files download one at a time; nothing documented moves a Site or a canvas.
Claude to ChatGPT, step by step
- Export your Claude data: your initials, Settings, Privacy, Export data, on the web or desktop app. The link expires after 24 hours, and the export includes your memory.
- Read your memory out: Settings, Capabilities, View and edit your memory, or ask Claude to write it out. ChatGPT documents no import for it, though you can add saved memories there yourself.
- If you used Claude Code or Cowork: the ChatGPT desktop app's Settings, Import brings over instruction files, skills, plugins, MCP config, hooks, project memories, and chats from the last 30 days.
- Download your artifacts from the artifact panel, one at a time.
The part neither app moves: what your AI made
Memory and chats are how the AI knows you. The pages, dashboards, prototypes and small apps it built are your work, and they live inside the app that made them: a ChatGPT Site in ChatGPT, an artifact in Claude. No documented import moves them across, and only the AI that made one can keep changing it.
That is the work worth keeping outside either app.
