What are Claude artifacts

What are Claude artifacts?

An artifact is something Claude makes that you'd put in front of someone: a document, a deck, a design, a dashboard or a small interactive tool. It opens beside the chat, starts private to you, and is saved in your Artifacts tab.

What spacesheep addsA link of its own for what Claude makes, readable without a Claude account. ChatGPT, Codex or Gemini can keep editing it.

The short answer

  • What it is: in Claude's words, "anything Claude makes for you that you'd put in front of someone: a design, a deck, a document, a dashboard, or a small interactive tool."
  • Where it opens: beside your conversation, where you can edit it, come back to it and share it.
  • Where it's kept: everything you make is saved to the Artifacts tab in Claude's sidebar.
  • Who sees it: only you, until you share it.
  • Which plans: Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise, and in Claude Code.

When Claude makes an artifact instead of a reply

Claude's help page says it makes an artifact when the content is:

  1. Significant and self-contained, typically over 15 lines.
  2. Something you're likely to edit, iterate on, or reuse outside the conversation.
  3. Able to stand on its own without extra context from the chat.
  4. Something you'll come back to or use later.

Shorter or conversational answers stay in the chat. You can also ask for an artifact directly.

What kinds of artifacts Claude makes

TemplateWhat it makesPlans
DocsDocuments; export to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google DocsEvery plan
SlidesDecks; export to PowerPoint or PDF, or straight to Google SlidesEvery plan
DesignDesigns and prototypes; export as a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTMLEvery plan
DashboardsDashboards, in betaPro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise (off by default on Enterprise)
MotionAnimation, exported as an MP4 video, in betaTeam and Enterprise

Outside the templates, Claude makes artifacts out of almost anything: code snippets, single-page websites, images, diagrams and flowcharts, and small interactive tools. On paid plans an artifact can connect to your apps and store up to 20 MB of text.

Legacy artifacts and Claude Code artifacts

  • Legacy artifacts are the ones made in a chat before 16 September 2026. They keep working and can still be published and shared, but new ones aren't made that way. A published legacy artifact opens for anyone with the link, without a Claude account.
  • Claude Code artifacts are live web pages Claude Code publishes from a session to a private URL on claude.ai. They update in place as the session goes on, each publish is a version, and you can share one publicly so it opens with no sign-in (on Team and Enterprise, once an Owner allows it).

No artifact appearing? Turn it on

Artifacts need "Cloud code execution and file creation" (called "Create and edit files" in the newer settings) to be on. Find it in Settings, Capabilities on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, or Organization settings, Capabilities on Team and Enterprise. For other fixes, see Claude artifact not working.
