Sites vs artifacts vs Design

ChatGPT Sites vs Claude artifacts vs Claude Design

Three ways an AI makes something you can share, each built for a different job. Here is what each does today, row by row, from OpenAI's and Anthropic's own docs, and when none of them fits.

The short answer

  • ChatGPT Sites if you want a hosted website or web app: a database, file storage, a custom domain and visitor counts. A public Site opens without an account. It is in beta on paid plans.
  • Claude artifacts for documents, decks, dashboards and small apps you share with people who use Claude, with view, comment and edit roles, on every plan.
  • Claude Design for prototypes and visual work you will hand to Claude Code or another tool. It has no version history yet.
  • None of them if the page has to outlive one AI, or the people reading it don't all use the same one.

Worth knowing before you pick

  • ChatGPT Sites has no data or inference residency at launch, and must not handle health or payment-card data. In Enterprise workspaces public publishing is off until an admin turns it on. Beta usage limits can stop a high-traffic Site from staying public.
  • Claude artifacts on Team and Enterprise stay inside your organization by default; a link for outsiders needs an Owner to allow external sharing. AI calls inside a shared artifact count against each viewer's own plan.
  • Claude Design comments sometimes don't appear, and the standalone site at claude.ai/design closes on 14 December 2026.
  • spacesheep has no custom domains and no password links; private pages go to named people who sign in.
Questions

Asked often.

Is ChatGPT Sites better than Claude artifacts?

For a hosted web app, yes: Sites has a database, file storage, custom domains and visitor counts. For documents and decks shared with people on Claude, artifacts have view, comment and edit roles on every plan. Neither lets another AI keep editing what it made.

Can people without an account open a ChatGPT Site or a Claude artifact?

A public ChatGPT Site opens without ChatGPT access; invited viewers sign in. Claude's help page says artifact viewers need a Claude account, except older published chat artifacts and Claude Code's public links.

Does Claude have custom domains for artifacts?

Claude's documentation doesn't mention custom domains. ChatGPT Sites can use a domain you own, except in Enterprise workspaces at launch.

Which one has comments?

Claude artifacts have a Commenter role and Claude Design has inline comments on the canvas. ChatGPT Sites' documentation doesn't mention comments.

Can I turn a Claude artifact into a ChatGPT Site?

ChatGPT Sites can start from a compatible local project, so an artifact exported as HTML may be a starting point. After that only ChatGPT edits it; on spacesheep, Claude and ChatGPT can both keep editing the same page.

How much do they cost?

ChatGPT Sites is included in Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu during its beta, with usage limits. Claude artifacts and Claude Design are on every Claude plan and count toward its usage limits. spacesheep has a free plan.
